Reviews from the pros: Fluid recovery drink mix

When I think of a “recovery drink” I think: something that I have to drink after an intense day training or racing to not feel terrible and be ready to ride/race the next day. The words “that was a really great tasting recovery drink” have rarely if ever came from my glycogen depleted post-race mouth.

Fueling your body with the right amount of protein and nutrients is critical for proper recovery, and a drink mix is the next best thing to a balanced meal. Plus it’s easier on your stomach and quickly assimilated. As a vegan athlete, it can be hard to find a recovery mix that meets your body’s needs, agrees with your stomach and above all is palatable.

Fluid Performance recently released their newest vegan friendly recovery drink, flavored cinnamon and vanilla.

The quick facts:

  • 3:1 protein to carb ratio
  • Small sprinkle of potassium and sodium
  • 160 calories

The protein source is non-GMO pea protein. Pea protein is a popular ingredient in most vegan recovery drinks, and for me, it’s easy on the stomach. Actually most endurance athletes I know prefer pea or rice protein (another popular vegan protein option) to whey as pea protein is generally more concentrated than whey. It contains 25 grams of protein per 30 gram scoop, while many whey proteins contain 23 or so grams of protein.

My experience

IMG_1339So after a solid interval day of staring at my SRM screen in pain, I tucked into a water bottle of Fluid Recovery mix. Two scoops and I was on my way to starting my recovery. The mix dissipated quickly into the water and foamed slightly, making it feel like a coffee drink. I used water as my liquid for convenience, but I’m positive that almond or rice milk would take this to another dimension of tasty-ness.

The taste is refreshing and different from most “super choco-brownie” flavored recovery mixes, mostly because of the cinnamon.  There is no unpleasant aftertaste, and it agreed with my stomach like they were old friends.

Now I’ve been using the Fluid Recovery mix as my go-to post workout drink for about a month. I’m happy with the results and the diminished next day fatigue. I actually look forward to drinking it after a long day in the saddle. I would highly recommend Fluids Vegan Recovery Mix for anyone looking to up their recovery as well as their lower their carbon foot print.

This is not a “vegan-only” product in my eyes. This is a supremely tasty, nutritionally balanced recovery drink that also happens to be vegan friendly.

I take a little vegan powder in the bottle on my bike—–sometime mixed with a little heed or just water. Good for long rides.
