Smelly feet: 6 ways to prevent it


So, you have smelly feet. The first step is admitting it. Because honestly, who doesn’t? It’s nothing to be ashamed of! But for the sake of your roommates, spouses or podiatrist, here are a few things that you can do to help prevent the stink.

1. Pedicures

Pedicures aren’t just for pampering; they help stop that embarrassing foot odor. Dead skin is not good for your feet nor for the smell – so get rid of it by exfoliating your feet! You don’t even have to get to the nail salon. Use a pumice stone or an exfoliating scrub to knock that dead skin right off. You can find some really nice smelling scrubs too! Additionally, if you’re not getting regular pedicures, keep your toe nails clean and trim to prevent bacteria that can add to the smell. And try a foot lotion! (Peppermint perhaps?)

2. Change shoes

You may not even realize it, but your feet sweat every day and fill your shoes with moisture. If you wear the same pair of shoes day after day, moisture and bacteria build up, causing that nasty smell. If you can avoid it, don’t wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row. But if you have to, sprinkle your shoes with baking soda or baby powder. This will help neutralize the odor and dry up moisture.

3. Go barefoot

Note: we only recommend this when you’re at home. Going barefoot gives your feet and shoes a chance to air out.

4. Black tea

Black tea is a great partner for smelly feet, but not just for drinking. When put directly on your feet, black tea helps stop the growth of bacteria on your feet. To do this, you’ll need five black tea bags steeped and mixed with four cups of warm water. Soak your feet every day for about twenty minutes. Add this to your “me-time” schedule, and your feet will be the envy of all feet lovers. Don’t forget to fully pat your feet dry once you are done.

5. Lemons and limes

Now we might be getting a little crazy here… But anything’s worth a try, right? Cut a lemon or lime in half and rub it on your feet before you go to bed. This will also help prevent bacteria growth.

6. Socks!
