If you’re one of those runners who dreads running hills, it may be because you’re not using the right hill running techniques. Use these 3 rules to become the hill master.
1. Run by effort rather than pace.
Running by effort during a hilly race allows you to efficiently manage your energy no matter the grade of the hill, the temperature, the wind, and any other variable.
2. Run with the flow of the hills.
In training, you can either practice how you’ll race on hills—that is, running up them in the easy and slow and using gravity to help you run quickly down them—or you can build fitness, strength, and stamina by running hard going up and going easy on the downhill to recover.
