It’s a running fact of life: runners get slower as they get older. We’ve been asking and wondering for decades if there was any way to maintain running speed over time. An answer to runner prayers, a new report has a suggestion.

This new Army-funded study conducted by researchers at East Carolina University and Wake Forest University suggests that strengthening the ankles and calves could help aging runners stave off the slowdown.
