Autistic teen and his dog are cross country running duo

Tyler Gerdts was born with a brain injury, has had 15 surgeries and is autistic. His amazing service dog Hugo makes it possible for him to run on his high school’s cross country team.

They may never win the best, but they always get the biggest cheers. Running with Hugo helps Tyler stay focused and on track. “[Hugo] really calms him down,” said Tyler’s coach.

“We want for Tyler what everybody else wants for their kid,” said Tyler’s mom tearfully, “and that is for him to be happy and safe.”

Hugo is the second canine in the country to compete in high school sports.
