Knitting her way through the New York City Marathon

Knitting and running may seem like two passions that sit on completely different sides of the cafeteria, but Northwestern University senior Meredith Parmalee has found a way to bring them together.

This Sunday, Parmalee will knit a scarf while running all 26.2 miles of the New York City Marathon.

This is Parmalee’s first marathon, but she has been training hard since the summer with a ball of yarn wrapped around her wrist. “The more I started doing runs while knitting, the more it became second nature for me,” she said. “It helps distract me from thinking about running . . . and my legs hurting and my arms hurting. It helps me keep my mind off of it.”

In addition, Parmalee intends to use her attention-grabbing feat to bring awareness to, and raise funds for, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
