Fantastic fun facts from Florida

By July 23, 2015Spotlight

Good days, sunshine- that’s what Florida’s all about, right? We love the sunshine state, and you’ll love these crazy, little-known facts about it!

1. Gator power!

Gatorade was named after the University of Florida Gators, where the drink was first developed. Should UF students get a discount on Gatorade then? We think so.

2. Love you, Bama. Here’s a dead fish.

Once a year, thousands of Floridians stand at the state line and toss dead fish into Alabama. This event is called the Mullet Toss and is hosted by the Flora-Bama Beach Bar in Pensacola. Because they deserve it?

3. License to ride

It is illegal to skateboard without a license in Florida. Where would one even go to acquire such a license?

4. Roll on to the cash

Rollerbladers rolling along the beach in Miami were the inspiration for the very first ATM machine. The machine was originally developed to allow these rollerbladers easy access to money.

5. Gators + crocks- only friends in Florida

The Florida Everglades are the only place in the world where alligators and crocodile co-exist. There’s no need for enemies while in Florida!

6. Thanks, Florida. Love, Ray Charles

Famous R&B singer and pianist Ray Charles began his career playing dance-hall gigs in Tampa, Fla. In 1990, Charles received an honorary degree in music from the University of South Florida in Tampa.

7. Everything’s beachy in Florida

Wherever you go in Florida, you’re never more than 60 miles from the beach. This is why Florida is our kind of state.

It is illegal for anyone wearing swimwear to sing while in public. Sorry, beachgoers, please remain silent unless you can put on a shirt.

9. It’s electric

Clearwater, Florida’s claim to fame is the United States city with the highest rate of lightning strikes per capita. Oooo, striking!

10. Stop to smell the roses

Florida means “Feast of Flowers” in Spanish. See, now you’re all cultured.

We love the Florida sunshine, but those hot temperatures can be brutal! Don’t forget your Swiftwick socks when you’re doing what moves you in the Florida heat. Shop local and find a Swiftwick dealer near you in the Sunshine State.
